We live through the histories we know. Many spend their lifetimes occupied with past events, eager to uncover their truth. One day, we, too, will be part of someone else’s history. It is no wonder that this subject fascinates many. Some historical mysteries have transcended time, and many academics spend the more significant part of their life figuring them out. The location of Cleopatra’s tomb and the mystery of the Devil’s footprints are two such historical events.

Why Does Cleopatra Matter?

Why wouldn’t a story of an ancient woman ruler who maintained her fierce dignity in the face of overwhelming odds not capture popular appeal? Cleopatra was the last active ruler of the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt. It ended with her suicide on August 10, 30 BC. Many centuries ago, she showed unparalleled brilliance and spirit.

Her lover, Mark Antony, led Egypt’s naval fleet in the deciding Battle of Alexandria against Octavian’s forces in 31 BC. After suffering a humiliating defeat and knowing that Egypt would now be in someone else’s hands, Antony killed himself. Cleopatra had more heart. She decided to live for her people but decided otherwise when she knew the sinister Octavian…
