The sixteen-year-long affair ended on January 27, 2009, with Lakhvinder “Lucky” Cheema’s murder in Southall, West London. The 39-year-old was set to marry in three weeks. This case stands out for carrying the scorned mistress trope to new heights.

A Sixteen-Year Long Affair

It all started with an unfortunate affair between Lucky and Lakhvir Kaur Singh in 1993. A mere 20 years old then, Lakhvir was in an arranged loveless marriage where her husband was going through an endless tirade of cancer treatments.

After a failed first marriage, Lucky had just moved into Lakhvir’s apartment building. Both entered into an affair that would continue for the next sixteen years. Even when Lucky moved into another building and found another home, Lakhvir visited his house every day. She cleaned after him, cooked for him and did laundry for the man; it was as if both were husband and wife, without the actual document.

Both went through a lot together. Lakhvir got pregnant twice and aborted the child for obvious reasons. They had to keep it a secret. After all, both were from Indian households.

Affair Ends With Heartbreak

However, all was not rosy in their world. Soon enough, Lucky realized that this wasn’t the future he wanted. Lakhvir would always be bound by her marriage: he wanted a family, a home and a future. Lakhvir couldn’t provide that.

39-year-old Lucky fell in love with a much younger 21-year-old Indian woman named Gurjeet Chough. Lucky and Gurjeet only knew each other for three months before matters turned serious enough to involve their families. They engaged in early 2009.

Lakhvir was to have none of it. She bombarded Lucky with threatening messages. She was betrayed at their love being so casually sidelined for another woman. Heartbroken, she called him a “bastard” and threatened to burn down his home.
